Welcome to Penistone Ladies’ Choir

Penistone Ladies Choir was formed in 1986 in the market town of Penistone, on the south-eastern edge of the Pennines in South Yorkshire.

Under the leadership of our Musical Director, Jane Hobson, we have grown rapidly over the past year to over 50 members. We enjoy singing a wide repertoire of songs from classical, religious, folk and contemporary styles, all ably accompanied by Yvonne Woffenden, the Choir’s accompanist of many years.

We rehearse every Monday evening from 7.45 pm to 9.45 pm at St John’s Community Centre, Penistone. We enjoy a busy schedule of rehearsals, concerts, fundraisers, with the occasional competition and trip away. If you’d like to sing with us, come along on any Monday evening to join in or just listen.

We entered a few festivals in 2018, and got off to a fantastic start at The Mrs Sunderland Festival in Huddersfield, winning 1st place in the Adult choir class, with an “Outstanding!” and the Joseph Hancock Memorial Trophy. Then in the evening we were placed 3rd in The Last Night Concert Class, called The Choir Challange.

Our thanks as always to our ever-enthusiastic musical director, Jane Hobson, and our superbly talented accompanist, Yvonne Woffenden for their never ending committment… Thanks also to the stiff opposition for making us work so hard!

Hello there! We’ve been a bit quiet on Facebook, although you can always rely on our Twitter feed @PChoirLadies and our website penistoneladieschoir.org.uk/ for the latest news.

There’s terrific news today though, we’ve been singing at the 50th Annual Penistone Competitive Music Festival. And we won a trophy!

We took first prize in the Female Voice Choirs class. It’s a particularly special trophy as the Choir had it commissioned in memory of Alice Milnes, who had a long association with the Choir. It will be great to see our name engraved on it.

The Open Challenge Choral class was a delight, with seven choirs of varying sizes and styles. We enjoyed listening to all the other performances. No prize this time but happy that we acquitted ourselves well.

And there’s news of a different kind coming soon, especially if you’re thinking of a musical gift for a special someone this Christmas. Watch this space......

We did a concert this week in a village hall - one we do every year, but this time the audience were sat round tables in cabaret style instead of in rows & it was so much better.

Our next concert is a new venue for us - Christ Church, Halton, Leeds on 27 Oct at 3pm. So it’s a 🚌trip for us...
