Penistone Ladies Choir was formed in 1986 in the market town of Penistone, on the south-eastern edge of the Pennines in South Yorkshire.
We are an exciting award-winning ladies choir with over 40 members. We enjoy singing a wide repertoire of songs from classical, religious, folk and contemporary styles. We rehearse every Monday evening from 7.45 pm to 9.45 pm at St John’s Community Centre, Penistone. We enjoy a busy schedule of rehearsals, concerts, weddings, fundraisers, with the occasional competition and trip away. If you’d like to sing with us, come along on any Monday evening to join in or just listen. No audition necessary and you don’t even have to be able to read music!
We usually enter a few competitive festivals each year and started 2019 by singing in The Mrs Sunderland Festival in Huddersfield. We weren’t placed that year but next up was the Eskdale Music Festival in Whitby and we were delighted to win the two classes that we entered, the Ladies Choir Class and the “Christmas in April” class and came away with two shiny silver cups!
We have produced 2 CD’s, one in 2017 entitled “Happy Together” and the second one “See Amid the Winter’s Snow”, which we recorded in conjunction with Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choir. These are still available to purchase from this website.
We love singing at weddings and private parties… If you know anyone wanting to enhance their special day, direct them to our “Wedding Page”…https://penistoneladieschoir.org.uk/wedding-day-choir/
Well what a strange 18 months it has been, making it hard to predict the future… We could never have imagined that we would be silenced, in lockdowns and will probably never take singing for granted again.
We have just had a change of Musical Director and would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new MD Joseph Shaw who started with us at the beginning of October and you can read all about in the “News” section. We are hugely excited to start this new chapter in the choir’s history with Joe.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to our outgoing Musical Director Jane Hobson for her hard work, dedication, teaching and enthusiasm in developing the choir over the course of the last 10 years and for keeping us going on zoom through those dark days of lockdown. We wish you all the best!
Thanks too to our ever-talented accompanist, Yvonne Woffenden!
For now we are just happy to be singing and making music together again. We have two concerts in the diary, the first one at Christmas in Penistone…Please do come and support us. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for news and events…
