MUSIC DIRECTOR– PENISTONE LADIES CHOIR

We are a friendly, 35-strong ladies non-auditioned community choir, based in Penistone, South Yorkshire. We are looking to appoint a new Music Director from January 2025. We have a varied repertoire including folk, classical, religious, spiritual, pop and show songs. Our main focus is on enjoying singing, and we would also like to improve our vocal skills.

We perform several times per year, including fundraising, community concerts and other events, often collaborating with other local choirs and bands. We also occasionally enter competitions and enjoy the challenge that this brings.

We have a professional accompanist and rehearse in Penistone (S36 9ED) on Monday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

The Music Director role consists of:

  • Leading rehearsals on Monday evenings, plus concerts, one-off events,
  • and any necessary preparative work
  • Attending 42 rehearsals per year. We usually break for Christmas, August and bank holidays. Flexibility around Bank Holiday Monday rehearsals is useful
  • Attending committee meetings as necessary eg to agree music selection.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Good communication and people skills, to work with the choir, and with the accompanist and committee
  • A motivational and inspiring directing style
  • The ability to lead a choir with differing levels of technical ability
  • A broad approach to choral repertoire
  • Experience leading choral groups
  • A music degree, similar qualification or training, or equivalent experience
  • An understanding of choral singing and vocal coaching techniques and an
  • Ability to develop those techniques within the choir.

The position is self-employed, offering an annual remuneration of £3564 plus performance fees, which is reviewed annually.
